Anonymous

Who We Are
Anonymous is a decentralized network of individuals focused on promoting access to information, free speech, and transparency. The group has made international headlines by exposing The Church of Scientology, supporting anti-corruption movements in Zimbabwe and India, and providing secure platforms for Iranian citizens to criticize their government.
Anonymous Analytics, a faction of Anonymous has moved the issue of transparency from the political level to the corporate level. To this end, we use our unique skill sets to expose companies that practice poor corporate governance and are involved in large-scale fraudulent activities.

What We Do
Then Anon met scientology, which annoyed them (scientology is good at annoying people in the internet. There's a whole wiki article about it...). Now Anon has expanded. A lot. There are all sort of people of every age who support the war with scientology, and sharing that common purpose might be called part of Anonymous (taking down scientology and extracting lulz).

A lot protest, some are involved in shopping scientology to the authorities whose laws they break. Some may or may not be involved in dubiously legal activity against the cult.

We provide the public with investigative reports exposing corrupt companies. Our team includes analysts, forensic accountants, statisticians, computer experts, and lawyers from various jurisdictions and backgrounds. All information presented in our reports is acquired through legal channels, fact-checked, and vetted thoroughly before release. This is both for the protection of our associates as well as groups/individuals who rely on our work.

Anonymous is more a collection of individuals with some common purpose or goal than a cohesive group. It's roots were on the "chan" website - where people posted anonymously (and still do). All sorts of stuff, hoaxes, photoshopped pictures (largely obscene) and occassionaly they had a go at other website for one reason or another.

Discussion:
From what I've read about Anonymous's previous actions, they've actually had really good intentions. But this is, as far as I'm concerned, too much of a controversial topic for them to get involved in. Apparently, Anonymous isn't really a "group", but more or less a generic name. The anonymous that are attempting to find the personal info of the Sony employees, judges, lawyers, etc, may just be a small group of people, that label themselves as "Anonymous". It would seem due to the simple nature of of anonymous, it would be simply impossible to find out any one specific person in it. I do think both sides have gone too far and need to back up and see the bigger picture. Also, if you notice most of those posts that were made by the people of "Anonymous", you would notice most of them are using internet-based words like "lawl". For myself personally, this shows the people involved in retrieving the personal info of the Sony representatives are indeed, nothing more than immature high schoolers. I think that if "Anonymous" were to attempt something like this, they would need more of an infrastructure, as well as solid reasons to explain why they are doing this. If you have a reply to this, please, make sure its actually and intellectual, thought-out reply, and not just "ZoMg YoU sUpPoRt AnOnYmOuS yOu FAIL!"...This should probably be moved to the section Serious Discussion... hmm...
